Museo Archeologico di Villa Ferrajoli - Albano Laziale

The prestigious venue, designed by F. Gasparoni circa 1834, takes inspiration from the neo-Classic style, as aptly shown by the elegant tetrastyle pronaos on the façade. The halls still preserve G.B. Caretti’s extremely delicate painted decorations.
The Museum is composed of 23 exhibition halls on three floors plus an adjoining archaeological park. It seamlessly brings together finds from the Paleolithic age to early Renaissance, illustrated by a group of good educational devices.
Funeral finds from the necropolis of the Second Parthian Legion are on display in the archaeological park at the back.

The Museum management may be contacted to visit the rest of the monumental tour:
AMPHITHEATRE
Septimius Severus had it built to entertain his soldiers and the populations from the surrounding cities; it could seat up to 16,000 people (III century AD)
CATACOMBS OF S. SENATORE
Located on the 15
th mile of Via Appia Antica (the old Appian Way), they are the largest suburbicary catacombs, with frescoes from the V, VI and XI century AD
HISTORICAL CEMETERY
The Bishop of Albano, cardinal Giovanni Fratesco Falzacappa, had it built at the Church of S. Maria della Stella in 1833; the bodies of the victims of the cholera epidemics that hit Albano in 1835 and 1867 are also buried there.
CISTERNONI
A big cistern, which supplied water to the camp of the Second Parthian Legion, the only one that is still working within the original Roman waterworks. It can store up to approximately 10 million litres of water (late II-III century AD)
SEPULCHRE OF THE ORAZI AND CURIAZI:
A monumental sepulchre on the edge of the ancient Appian Way, near the Catacombs; its shape takes inspiration from Volterra’s urns. Late Republican age (I century BC)
ROTUNDA
A former nymphaeum that belonged to Emperor Domitian’s villa (I century AD), converted into baths for the officers of the Second Parthian Legion (III century AD) and consecrated as a Sanctuary to S. Maria della Rotonda in 1060
FORMER IMPERIAL VILLA OF POMPEUS MAGNUS
The remains of this large villa can be visited in the Municipal Park formerly known as Villa Doria. The cisterns and cryptoportici too can be visited on request (I century BC-IV century AD)
VILLA “CAVALLACCI”
The large residential villa located between Via Verdi and Via Mascagni retains its ancient wall structures and marble mosaic floors (I century BC-IV century AD). The many archaeological finds from the excavations are on display in the Museo Archeologico di Villa Ferraioli
