Museo del Giocattolo

The Museo del Giocattolo, or Toy Museum, was opened in Zagarolo on March 18th 2005 in the 16th-century Palazzo Rospigliosi, with 18 exhibition halls covering approximately 1000 square metres.

The Museum illustrates the evolution of toys in the 20th century, with special reference to relations between toys and the social and cultural scenario, with about 800 exhibits, including some outstanding historical factories that are now a legend in the history of mechanical toys, such as Lehmann, Marklin, Hornby, Ingap, Bing, Shuco, Tipp, Lenci, Furga or Dep.

The Museum takes special care of explaining the meaning of the toys on display to the youngest generations: that’s why it is very keen on educational events and workshops, where it teaches how to make toys, puppets and marionettes. The goal of the Museum is to be a lively ‘container’, full of initiatives to promote reflections and nostalgic memories, while also holding cultural and educational activities, conferences, workshops, temporary exhibitions and shows.

With its exhibits, the Museum tells not only about reality as perceived through a child’s sensitivity but about our own memory through the shapes of the magical items that populate the glass cases and the halls of the museum. The exhibition panels show moments in everyday life: the city, the street, the family, the architectures, work, transport, living in the space along with extraordinary travels, car races, the circus and the funfair. They come from such historical collections as: Billig, Crestetto Oppo, Luisa Dellanzo, Marina Caprari, Sabrina Alfonsi.

In the museum, cinema, theatre, sports and motor racing are shown through the imagination of the industry and the historical crafts, so people of all ages and from all backgrounds can understand and interact with an object, the toy, which interprets the collective imagination of children and adults alike more than anything else.
