Museo Geofisico

The Museo Geofisico, or Geophysics Museum, is located at the back of the ancient Colonna Fortress, in a scenic place overlooking the old centre of Rocca di Papa. It illustrates the idea and the scientific findings that have led to a knowledge of the shape of the inside of the Earth. The tour starts with a philosophical game and goes on through exhibits, game machines, tools and scientific documents about the earth’s geology, geography and physics; sciences that have contributed to the understanding of the inside of the Earth.

There is an interactive model of the inside of the Earth, illustrating the flow of ideas from the scientists’ minds to the final definition of a universally-recognised model. It also illustrates the theories that were put forward in the XVI century, when nobody thought the Earth could have any other shape but a spherical one, and people started to think about what could be inside it.

The geological evolution of volcanism in the Albano area is showcased on the terrace, with a geological plastic model of the region’s volcano and a number of samples of the main local varieties of rocks.
